Minrls
contains a number of topics that cover a wide range of mineral information
useful to mineral collectors, rockhounds, mineralogists, geologists, and earth sciences
teachers. Crystallography The crystal systems are defined with crystal forms shown in 3-D. Unit cells are discussed and the cell axes are defined and given for each of the crystal systems. The minerals belonging to each system are also listed. Finally, there is a discussion of why different minerals form certain crystal shapes. Mineral Forms Over 70 of the most common mineral forms are listed and the minerals exhibiting each form given. This is a great help to mineral collectors and anyone needing to identify a mineral. Mineral Environments Over 40 environments are listed in which minerals can be found. The minerals found in each of these environments are also given as an aid to mineral collectors. Mineral Families and Series Approximately 1000 minerals are listed together with the family and/or series to which they belong. These cover the most common members of the mineral kingdom. Identification Tests These tests are used to define mineral properties in addition to the nine used in the Minrls identification routines. They cover the gambit from very simple to very complex. Mineral Terms Over 150 mineral terms are listed with their definitions. Hardness/Density Ranking Since all minerals have a range of densities and hardnesses, it is impossible to produce a single list of hardness and density rankings. Minrls handles this problem by having two rankings, one for the highest values of harness or density and the other for the lowest.
